Winston Churchill, known for being the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, spent time in Africa during this colonial period. In 1899 Winston Churchill accepted a job with the Morning Post to report on the Boer War in South Africa. On his first assignment the train he was riding was ambushed and Churchill was captured (National Churchill Museum. n.d.). He became a prisoner of war. Two weeks after his capture, Winston scaled a wall and traveled by night trying to escape alive (National Churchill Museum. n.d). He reached what is now present day Mozambique and returned to South Africa. He received a hero's welcome (National Churchill Museum. n.d). These events helped to advance his political career. Churchill again visited Africa in 1907, prompting his book, My African Journey (National Churchill Museum. n.d).
